Professor Aaron B Caughey

Aaron B. Caughey is Professor and Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Associate Dean for Women’s Health Research and Policy at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, OR.

His medical training was at Harvard Medical School and he also earned a Master’s Degree in Public Policy from the Kennedy School of Government, and both an MPH in Epidemiology and a PhD in Health Economics at the University of California, Berkeley. His residency training was at the combined Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital program and his fellowship in Maternal-Fetal Medicine was at the University of California, San Francisco.

As faculty at UCSF, he served as Director of the Diabetes and Pregnancy Program, Director of Perinatal Research, and Director of the MFM Fellowship. His research is focused on utilizing epidemiologic, biostatistical, and decision analytic methods to examine clinical questions related to complications of term and preterm pregnancies, gestational diabetes, and prenatal diagnosis and has led to more than 300 peer-reviewed publications.

His research has been funded by the NIH, AHRQ, HRSA, and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and is currently funded to do research on elective induction of labor, prenatal genetic testing, and management of the second stage of labor.

As a singer, he sang with the San Francisco Symphony Chorus, which earned two Grammy Awards during his tenure, and has sung with the Oregon Symphony in a recent Beethoven 9 concert. He lives with his wife, an MFM-geneticist, and their four energetic children in Portland.
