Dr Jo Black

Perinatal Consultant Psychiatrist

Jo Black is a consultant perinatal psychiatrist currently based in Devon. She trained in London and Sydney and took a consultant appointment 7 years ago.

In the last 5 years she has developed a community perinatal mental health team which began with a ½ time nurse and a few hours of medical time. It has grown and now offers services to any women with a mental health concern across the county with clinical teams based in all 3 general hospitals, The Royal Devon & Exeter, Torbay Hospital and North Devon District Hospital .

She is part of the steering group, SW Maternity and Children’s Clinical Network, and leads work streams on perinatal mental health in this network.

Jo delivers training and lectures to a variety of professional across the health community and these include midwives, medical students, GPs, obstetricians, mental health staff and health visitors.  She co-delivers training with women with lived experience of perinatal mental health problems.

She was executive producer of a film about recovery from perinatal mental health problems called “Head Up Heart Strong” which has been viewed over 6000 times in more than 40 countries, and is a resource recommended by several medical Royal Colleges, and is used as part of several training programmes, both in the UK and overseas.

Jo is the SW England regional representative on the Royal College of Psychiatrists Perinatal Faculty.

Jo manages a charitable fund “Little Something”. The funds aims are to support women and families experiencing perinatal mental health problems, adding value to services already provided within the NHS.
